Natural hair struggles are not only experienced by new naturalists but even if you have been natural for a while you still get to struggle a bit. If you happen to feel like taking care of your natural hair is too hard then you are struggling. There are so many reasons why we as naturals tend to struggle with our hair and here are some of the most common reasons. These are holding us back from fully experiencing the journey of our natural hair.
You Haven’t Figured Out Your Natural Hair Routine
Finding a routine is the most important thing in your natural hair journey and once you’ve established a proper routine taking care of your hair becomes so much easier and it’s no longer a hassle. Find what works for you and stick to that. Someone can say I twist my hair every night but then this does not mean it’s going to work for you because the truth is it might not. For me, my routines are divided into daily, weekly and monthly. This has been working for me for the past 2 years.
My routine includes the following:
- Daily – LOC Method.
- Weekly – Co-wash (washing with conditioner) In winter it’s after 2 weeks.
- Monthly – Shampoo-wash and protein treatment (if necessary).
This works for me and my routine fits perfectly with my lifestyle.
Find a routine that works for you.
You Haven’t Experimented Enough
It can seem daunting to decide what to do with your hair but there are so many natural hairstyles to try. For me youtube is my go-to for hairstyles. With all these different styles it can be overwhelming to try all of them out but when you pick one and master it, then it becomes easier to learn other hairstyles. Even with products, experiment on your hair and learn which products are good for you. You have to continue to work and try new things. Practice makes perfect, so if you don’t experiment you will never know what looks and works best for your hair type.
Thinking One Product Will Fix Everything
Let’s be honest there is no “one magic product” to solve all of your natural hair problems. More than likely you will need to try a few products before finding the right one which ties in perfectly with the point of experimenting. If we see someone with good hair, the only thing we tend to ask is what products are you using, forgetting that we don’t have the same hair type or texture so what works for them might not necessarily work for us. Most importantly, when experimenting take note of the ingredients of the products you are using. I find that using products from different lines produces amazing results.
You Compare Your Progress to Others
Comparison, in general, is something we all struggle with and social media has heightened it a lot.
So many factors contribute towards hair growth and we always forget all of them and start stressing about how our hair is not growing fast as we would like it to. I know how hard it can be when you hear someone say “I did the big chop two years ago and my hair has grown to shoulder length”.
This can mess with your self-esteem a lot and you’ll start questioning yourself and your routine. I’ve been natural for quite some time and I’ve learned that I need to stop worrying about everyone else’s progress and just focus on my journey and enjoy my hair as it is now. Enjoy it at the moment and everything else will come when it comes but I am not going to spend time worrying about everyone’s progress but my own.
