Sometimes in life we get so busy with work, school and life in general. Self-care becomes something that is pushed towards the back of our minds which shouldn’t be the case as it is essential in our daily lives. We all have different reasons which we can list and these will always be there in our lives. A few months ago I decided to change my mentality regarding self-care and today I decided to share some of the tips I used to help me incorporate a self-care in my life. But, what works for me might not work for you. However, I hope that these tips can change your perspective on self care, and spark some new ideas on how you can move self care closer to the top of your priority list. Because self care is essentially just taking care of yourself. Shouldn’t you be a priority in your own life?
Without any further ado, lets get to it.
Self care can be defined differently for people, thus finding a definition that fits you is going to personalize it and make it easier to adopt. Self care is simply “any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health (PsychCentral).” Because you are the only person that knows you, its easier to find what works precisely for you. This definition helped me understand what is self-care and how important it is to practice self-care in my life. In this process I got to identify reasons why I wasn’t taking this seriously.
Creating a Routine
After understanding what self care is, I had to identify practices that resonated with me and I would like to integrate in my life. I had to identify things that make me happy, help me relax, and keep me rejuvenated. With this list, I was able to create a routine, whereby I scheduled when I wanted to do certain tasks/items i.e. daily, weekly or monthly. This depends entirely on your schedule, you can have different routines for different times because sometimes it might be impossible to fit other things on a daily basis. In order to stick to your routine, it must be something that resonates with you and you look forward to.
This can be changed at any time depending on how you feel.
Those were the tips I used, I hope you got something that could help you priorities self care in your life. I totally get how difficult things can be at times especially when you have a lot going on in your life. However, once you develop healthy self care habits, you’ll be so happy you did and you’ll wonder why you didn’t try this a lot sooner (how I felt lool).
