WHY I STOPPED RELAXING MY HAIR? || NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY
Hello fellow friends,
Welcome to the new section of my blog, that addresses natural hair. I wanted to add this section last year, but decided against it as I wanted to focus on one thing as it was my first year of blogging. So I think now is the right time to add other contents to my blog. I have a lot of things that I would like to talk about or that I am passionate about.
You might have a question: Are you changing the focus of your blog?
And the answer to that is NO, nothing is changing, I’ll continue doing book related posts and this would be an added section to the blog.
I thought it was appropriate for the first blog post on this section to be about the reasons why I decided to stop relaxing my hair, so let’s get to it.
When I was in primary school we were not allowed to grow our hair, so for those years I had short hair. When I went to high school, I started growing and relaxing my hair, but then at my school they were so many constraints when it came to hairstyles. Your hair was supposed to be in a ponytail or plaited with no extensions. That on its own was frustrating as my hair was still short for a ponytail. Then I decided to cut my hair. When I was in grade 11, I started growing and relaxing my hair again.
Generally my hair is so soft, so that softness combined with a relaxer, equals to something worse LOL. You may think I am joking but I’m not. When my hair is relaxed, it’s like the extensions we use to braid our hair, making it difficult for me to find someone to plait my hair because of the softness, and that was mostly the reason why I did not plait my hair often.
In 2014, I had to move to Pretoria and I didn’t know anyone who can specialize in doing my hair and I just wanted to take a break as well. So a few weeks in Pretoria, when I took down the braids I had when I moved, I decided to take the plunge and cut my hair which resulted to this.
So from July 2014 I was cutting my hair monthly and that’s when I decided I’m not relaxing my hair again. So in 2015 July my sister was getting married, so I decided to start growing my hair again . With that said, my last hair cut was in January 2015.
From there I started plaiting my hair, I think it was around April 2015.
I took another plunge and colored my hair, which I might do again probably soon LOL (let me know below if you’d like to know how I took care of my hair during that time).
I’ve been natural for 3 years now and can I say that I’ve learned a lot from this journey. They were times when I contemplated about cutting my hair, but decided otherwise. This is my hair now.
I know this was a long blog post, but thank you for reading until the end. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them down below. If I can answer them I will or I’ll write a full blog post.
If you have any topics you’d like me to address, please leave them below.
God Bless You.
Until next time,
