“Bawse is a person who exudes confidence, hustles relentlessly, reaches goals and smiles genuinely because he or she has fought through it all and made it out to the other side.” —Lilly Singh
Hello my fellow book-lovers!
A few weeks back, I borrowed a book from a friend which I didn’t know much about, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or not. But little did I know that I would be hooked from the first page to the extent that the following day I order my own copy (for annotation purposes).
Title: How to be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life
Author: Lilly Singh
Published: 28 March 2017
Genre: Biography, Autobiography
Pages: 319
SUMMARY
This book is about Lilly Singh, popularly known as Superwoman on YouTube (link) (if you haven’t seen her videos, I suggest you check her out. I am currently binge watching her videos lol). Lilly is a content creator who started her YouTube channel in 2010, to overcome her depression. She is also an entrepreneur, singer, actress and comedian. In this book she talks about the lessons she has learned throughout her career.
MY THOUGHTS
This book is super easy to read that is compiled of 50 chapters (But don’t be intimidated because the chapters are short; 2-3 pages). These chapters are divided into 4 main sections, namely;
- Master your mind – she talks about the fact that we cannot control everything in life, but we can only control and change ourselves.
- Hustle harder – she talks about driving and motivating yourself into doing the things you love.
- Make heads turn – the focus here is about investing in yourself, paying attention to what you need and exudes confidence. Things that happen in your life are not always your fault.
- Be a unicorn – she talks about being a nice person.
I loved the writing style; it’s simple, funny and relatable. You can hear Lilly’s voice throughout the book, it’s like she is talking to you directly. She explains things in a clear, smart and funny way. The humor in this book is priceless and the examples are relatable,
I really enjoyed the formatting of the book, it’s written in rainbow colors. It is colorful and includes images.
She engages the reader a lot, at the end of each chapter there is a section for answering questions based on that chapter.
Overall, this was a good book and I really recommend it.

“Don’t give away all your secrets or reveal all your vulnerabilities. It’s up to you to decide what to reveal and when.”
“You’ll never know if you can accomplish something or be great at something if you don’t commit.”
“There’s always a way to be open and honest while also being respectful. Anyone who behaves otherwise is just being lazy.”
