“A #GIRLBOSS is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it.”

This is a business memoir, Nasty Gal founder and CEO Sophia Amoruso shares her story. Amoruso moves home, opens an eBay store for vintage clothing, and, after a lot of hard work and finds herself the CEO of a $100 million fashion business called Nasty Gal. Throughout the book she talks about how she ended up where she is today, from being a high school dropout to pursuing a life of dumpster diving and hitchhiking while being unable to hold up a normal job to finally finding a place, or rather creating a place, where she feels comfortable and in her element.

What I learned

  • You can work really hard on something you’re passionate about.
  • It is okay to be different and look weird among your peers but stand for who you are and what you believe in.
  • There is no one road-map to success.

  • I am really fascinated by Sophia’s story that she managed to start a company from nowhere and make a name for herself.
  • I was captivated by the writing style, which is fun, fresh and the language is youthful making it easier to follow and understand her story.
  • The biggest appeal for me was one chapter in the book which is all about hiring, firing, getting jobs, interviews, writing resumes and cover letters. Personally, I have a challenge when it comes to writing cover letters and this chapter helped me a lot in understanding exactly what employer’s look for in cover letters. That said, the advice in this chapter was helpful for me, thus I would really recommend this book.
  • I also enjoyed the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter.

“A #GIRLBOSS is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it.”

“But if these years have taught me anything it is this: you can never run away. Not ever. The only way out is in.

“Knowing when to speak up and when to shut up will get you very far not only in business, but in life.”

“While I have the freedom to wear whatever I want at work, I dress the part. When I am confident in what I am wearing, it makes me feel more confident throughout the day. Granted, I could probably negotiate a deal in my pajamas, but I’m a lot more dangerous in a pair of leather pants and boots that could hurt a fool.”
